Not sure about quail, but chukar can be raised in a pen. More difficult than raising on wire, advantage is their beaks do not get long and curve.

We use 3 gallon black rubber water pans. One 3 gal pan will cover 100 birds, so if you have 500 birds 5 pans would be enough. Fill them each day, if they have ice in them, dump the ice and refill. Once you have 1" of snow or more on the ground no need to water, the birds will pick away at the ...

Depends. If you have a good sandy soil that allows rain to drain, than I would say wet is better. If you have a clay/heavy soil and the pens mud up wet can make it worse, especially if the tails are long enought to drag in the mud. During dry seasons, undergrowth will suffer and the birds may ...

Its good early in the season, when it is about half tall. It provides big leaves to protect birds and provide cover. As it gets taller its very stalky and shades out any undergrowth. When it matures all you will have left in the pen is wood stalks, with no undercover for the birds to pick at. ...
