Has anyone ever hunted pheasants with a beagle? I know they are known for rabbit hunting but with their keen sense of smell (arguably the best in the world), I was wondering if they could be trained to be a consistent flusher.

I have not heard of anyone hunting with a beagle, but I'm sure you could train him to do so. It's been my experience you can train most dogs to do anything, assuming you have enough patience.

Artichoke. I'm no expert. I raise pheasants and german shorthaired pointers. We have a hundred acre field behind our property that I watch the rabbit hunters work in the fall. It seems once those beagles get on scent they cant be turned off. That sounds good until you realize that they wont Whoa. So they'll be flushing whatever their chasing ( Pheasants or any other bird that flys) way out of the reach of your shotguns reach. Rabbits on the other hand keep running in circles until they offer a shot. Good Luck.

I was thinking the same thing jon.......it just seems to be in their nature to be relentless after they pick up a scent. While Im sure its possible to train an exceptional beagle to restrain themself it would be easier to just find a breed that is suited to flushing or pointing.
