Hunting ruffed grouse is one of my favorite things to hunt. They are beautiful and challenging bird to hunt. I have never hunted them with a dog, and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on the best kind of dog to use. Another question: would a dog that is trained on pheasants be able to make the transition to grouse? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I have a black lab, and she doesn't care what type of bird it is. She grew up chasing pheasants and when I took her on her first grouse hunt, she was around 7 years old and flushed grouse and woodcock.

that sounds like a pretty versatile dog. Will she hunt ducks as well?

Grouse hunting can be done with either a flusher or pointer depends on the kind of hunting you prefer. Grouse will generally hold tight in thick cover, so with a flusher you have to stay close in order to get a shot when the bird goes up. Because of this I prefer hunting over a pointer because it is a more controlled situation often you can see the bird on the ground and decide on your approach before you flush it.

So it is your experiece that grouse will actually hold tight for a pointer much like a pheasant would do?
