How does the DNR determine wild pheasant populations? Where could I find these estimates for a given state?

Each state has there own system,...essentially they take the harvest records from the previous years, then a spring crowing count of the # of males in a region, they will also do nest drags to determine number of hens on nests and then brood counts to see number of off spring for the year. All this is put into an algorthum and it models the projected population for the year. Usually check the local Fish and Game website late spring to early summer and they will have the report available to the public.

So is it just a state wide estimate or is the estimate based on regions of the state, like deer are estimated?

generally it is broken down by region.

My population estimates are a lot easier,...I open the freezer and count the number in there
