Everyone talks about South Dakota as the end-all be-all place to hunt pheasants. But I've heard of cost and access issues for people that go to SD. Are there other states that have good hunting with less of those headaches?

Iowa is a good one, the population is low this year because of the flooding last year (spring/summer 08). But normally the population is great with lots of public hunting opportunities. North Dakota in the SW has a stable population with many places to acces too.

South Dakota is tough to beat even with those headaches,...get away from the major highways and you have less competion, people are generally pretty friendly and generally for a trespass fee you can get on some top pheasant hunting,...also contact the fish and game for a walk in area map, this is private land that is opened up to walk in access it changes year to year so get a current map.

Otherwise look at kansas, nebraska, NE montana and Western MN is very similar to SD but doesn't have quite the populations.

You can check www.gamebirdhunts.com for state by state links or oppurtunities

What would a trip to SD run? What are typical trespass fees?

I can't speak for SD but in North Dakota the locals were saying landowners charge $100/guy per day.
