I have recently hatched my first batch of pheasant chicks. About 1 in4 seem to have issues with their legs. They can't stand and seem to have a serious problems. They just sort of flop around mostly using their wings. Are these sort of problems usually genetic, disease, or something I did wrong in handling the eggs? And, how soon do I need to cull these poor guys out?

If the legs are splayed off to the sides of hips, this is a physical injury that the hip pops out of the socket because the hatching basket was slippery. Put paper towel on the bottlom of your hatching basket so they don't slip and pop out the hip joint. Cull them right away they won't recover from it, you can hand nurse each one if you want but they will never be normal. The other possibility is a slipped tendon with this one leg is usually crooked or straight back, this is often caused by too hot of temperature during the final hatching last couple of days as the eggs and chicks are giving off heat and co2 as they begin to peep. Monitor the temperature and reduce if it is rising the last 4 days.

Thanks! Makes sense. I'll try your suggestions.
