Other than the obvious disadvantages like allergies and appearance, is ragweed a decent cover crop for raising pheasants in a small pen?

Its good early in the season, when it is about half tall. It provides big leaves to protect birds and provide cover. As it gets taller its very stalky and shades out any undergrowth. When it matures all you will have left in the pen is wood stalks, with no undercover for the birds to pick at. Another disadvantage is is able to grow thru the roof. Literally!

I think the weed of choice is lambsquarter. It is a slower growing plant, but it has leaves up and down it's stem. As a bonus, it makes excellent winter cover.

So every other farm trys to get rid of lambs quarter, but lambs quarter is good for pheasant farmers? Where can you get seed?

finding lambsquarter seed can be difficult. The first place I would check would be the internet. Second, check with local farms. Sometimes lambsquarter can be so bad in fields the seed is in with the grain at harvest. Sometimes it can be seperated.
