Most of the birds in my pen look good, but a few look like someone took a sciccors and cut 1/2 of the tail off. What causes this and how can I prevent it from happening?

More than likely the feathers got dry and brittle and broke off. This typically comes from overcrowding. As the birds are growing they may appear in decent shape, as the tail feathers get long enough to drag on the ground and the pen gets wet and muddy the mud collects on the tail, making it more brittle. This is o.k. if it happens a couple of times but if the pen stays muddy it can become a problem.

Thin your birds out as much as possible and straw your pens around the feeders, along the perimeter and in the corners.

How long will it take to regrow the feather once it breaks off? Does this happen with wild birds too?

It my experience, it will take 8-10 weeks to grow back. However, you have to pull the broken tail off in order to get a new tail to start growing.

If a bird loses his tail feather is he less likely to fly since he doesn't have the tail any longer?
