I am raising pheasants and was wondering what the best cover would be for my pen?

Another queston that came to my mind. Is there such a thing as too much cover inside my pen?

It depends on your location. A great perennial is lambs-quarter. Most farms hate this plant but for pheasants it is ideal, it germinates in cool weather (early), it doesn't get to tall and it provides both low and high cover. If your keeping birds in your pen later in the season lambs-quarter is great because it gets a woody stalk and holds up well through snow.

There is such a thing as too much cover. Birds like/need open space. I would recommend 10% of your pen being open space. Mow a path around the edge and one down the middle. It gives the birds a chance to dry themselves off and it helps you see the birds.

What would be some alternatives to Lambs' quarter?

Will corn work?
