Hey guys

so i've been thinking about raising some bobwhites for my dog to hunt up. i drew up a plan for a pen that 4'w x 12'L x 4'H.

Q #1: how many birds can i raise in this sizeof a pen?

q #2: should the pen be off the ground or on the ground?

Q #2: is the pen high enough for them to be able to fly(basically i want good flies out in the field)

thanks to all that reply

Your pen should be off the ground it will save you on problems latter. With 48 square feet that isn't awhole lot of space we use 16 square feet per bird for pheasants. quail you can go tighter because they are less aggressive and more social then pheasants I wouldn't go more then 20-30 in a pen that size.

Birds do not need height in a pen to "exercise" there health is more important that they have good genetics, plenty of clean water, a complete feed ration not just bird seed or one type of grain, and parasite and disease free.

I would also like ot point out that while density and pen do play an important role in keeping birds healthy, nutrition is probably the most important. Quail can be touchy and susceptible to disease. A good quality complete feed with medication is key to raising a bird that will fly. Bottom line, if the bird is not completely healthy, it's not goign to fly as well.

Good Luck!

I raise birds in a 16 ft by 7ft high and 4 ft. I have found by putting sides on the pen 24 inches high and two roosts at about 5 feet high the bird get good exercise and are flighty. Make sure you put some roofing on 1/2 the top of pen. Also a low roof at about 1 foot from bottom 4 foot by 4foot. My pens are movable and I only have 4 inches of clearance from the ground. Go to www.bootandbriars.com for good info. Good Luck
