I have had a pair of red golden for three years. last year the female built a nest for the first time and laid eggs in it. However, she would remove and replase the egss constantly. I couldn't figure it out. She laid approximately 10 eggs but never sat on them. This year she just built a nest and laid one egg in the nest. The day after, I went out to check the nest to see if the egg was still in it. I happened to look just as the male was rolling the egg out of the nest . he then proceeded to remove some of the straw from the nest. I now suspect the male was removing the eggs last year and she was putting them back. Does any one have a clue as to why he is doing this or experienced this with their own birds? I would also like some advise about getting another female or two. I would like to be able to get a hatch to add to my stock. (more females hopefully) Am I limiting myself with just one female?

The reason the male is removing the eggs is because when the female finishes laying the nest he doesn't get "lets say any NOOKIE" If the eggs are removed the hen will keep trying to lay eggs and will stay receptive to the male's breeding attempts. Once the hen starts laying eggs remove the male and put him in a seperate pen.

Yes you are limiting yourself with one female you are starting with a very small genetic pool, you can avoid the imbreeding problems by keeping only the females and buying in or trading the males for other males. If the hen won't brood and hatch your eggs check into buying an incubator,...you can get some pretty nice table top incubators that will do a couple dozen eggs for under 100.00 dollars. Then you remove the eggs daily which should keep your hen in production and allow you to build your flock quicker.
