I am having a mill grind corn with soybeans, and brewers distilled grains, and would like to know, """how much clean sand""" to put in the mix per 1000 lbs for grit.

Thank you, Hunter

I would recomend just putting it in the pen next to the feeders. The birds will eat what they need.

Hunter,

I would agree with just offering free range grit,....It will save you for having to pay for hauling the grit in the feed,...allows you to controt the type of grit, prevents wear and tear on the milling equipment. Also with milled grains, the grains have already been mechanically broken down so very little grit would be necessary if at all to help with the digestion process.

Also I noticed you mentioned you are using "distillers grain" You should know although this is a cheaper source of grain it is less nutritious and acts more as a filler,...so your birds may not be getting all the nutrients they need from the feed alone. That should be fine for holding birds but I would look for other options on any laying birds or for starting birds at least the first six weeks.

I was using distillers grains because is 27% protien. Soybeans are slightly cheaper and 46% protein, but for an amino acid balance need both. Distillers grains are very low in one amino acid, but high in others, including one amino acid that Soybeans are low in. Soy is high in the one amino acid that Distillers is low in, and Distillers is high in the one amino that Soy is low in.

I also thought the little more bulk would be good for their digestive system, gives it something to work on!

My mix was predominantly corn, with enough distillers grains, and soybeans to come to 12% protein. This is just to hold the birds until a month before egg laying.

Any thoughts or comments?

I am also feeding to Quail, the quail are in a building, and the only grit they have is what I give them. The last time I gave them grit in a dish, many of them packed their craw full of grit and died. So, no more of that!
